We Buy A Mattock For Mama...

They say be careful what you wish for.  And this rang true during the week, when our Indian summer broke in a most spectacular fashion.  A storm ripped through Adelaide on Wednesday night which bought hardly any rain, but it did bring violent gusts of coastal winds.  So violent in fact that it lifted ALL OF THE MULCH I HAVE CAREFULLY LAID OVER THE PAST FEW WEEKS!!!  Amazingly the freshly planted babaco and buddleja survived...  but they're condition is sketchy at best.  I'm hoping for a miracle recovery.
The sudden undoing of all my hard work trying to smother the couch grass however, has forced me to plant out some of my first autumn seeds.  I took my frustration out on this whack-arse weather by smashing away the couch with a mattock.  Possibly not the most lady-like of gardening tools, but by gosh is it good for releasing pent up anger!  In fact, I recently inherited a collection of mattocks from my grandmother dating back some 40+ years...  well they do say the family that stays together, mattocks together.  Apparently...

Mattocks R Us

So after much mattock-mania, I had removed a good square metre-ish of spent couch, topped up with some soil and planted out 'Aquadulce' broadbeans, perpetual spinach and borage.  It's not quite where I had planned to place the first of this season's veg seeds, but when opportunity knocks you'd be a fool not to answer the call.  Of course being that this was a slightly unplanned planting, I had to improvise with a border of sorts.

Makeshift Borders R Us...

I'm all for 'on the fly', and the moon was saying 'PLANT NOW'.  Luckily we have a ready supply of breeze block and bricks which is filling in until I actually get a decent border in place.

The rest of the yard is in need of a good rotary hoe-ing.  Along with some paving required, I think this is a job that will have to be outsourced.  With quotes to be obtained, I guess you could say I need to hoe-around...

Gardening aside, the week also saw a return to standing behind the DJ Decks last Thursday.
Yes, in a former life, YurtGirl was GothDJGirl.  She carried a blacker-than-black case filled with music to destroy your soooooouuullll....  In a nut(coffin-shaped)shell, I was involved with various club nights in the goth scene.  While my clubbing days are well over I still co-host Shadowplay with Miss Michelle, which is (to the best of my knowledge) the longest running goth/darkwave radio show in Australia.  The shows are available for download here!

But I digress.

Michelle and I were asked of our friends who run the fabulous bar and dining establishment, dragonfly, if we would take part in their Thursday event, Whats In Your Box.  $9 pizzas, $6 beer/cider and some tunes; this is my kind of night out these days.  So while people munched on margaritas and chugged some ale, we provided the dark and brooding soundtrack of their lives. A lot of fun, and a little challenging as one of the CD players didn't end up functioning.  However it really didn't matter as the whole purpose of the exercise was the aforementioned fun.  There may be a whisper of a future Saturday night gig... but I shall keep you posted.
