Sunday Morning Bliss

Sooo many weeks without a post! Shame on me!!

With no real excuse other than I have felt a little on the uninspired side for blog posts. And an attack of bloggers-anxiety... ie. is it really worth me writing about . But I've overcome all that, and I'll try not to make this entry to wordy. I'll ease my way back into it, so to speak!

So we're almost at the end of May, and in Australia that SHOULD mean Winter is not far away. Unfortunately (or fortunately for some) it's been a rather mild... actually down right bloody WARM autumn! Today we hit about 21 degrees celcius (around 69.8 degrees farenheit in old money). While it means a nice warm, sunny afternoon to potter in the garden it does mean that we're not really getting the rain that we desperately need. I'm pleased to say though that I've sufficiently mulched my fledgeling veggie patch so that it is retaining moisture very well. In the next 2 months I hope to be harvesting Romanesco Broccoli, Broad Beans, and Tatsoi. The raspberry canes I also planted in are doing very well in their spot by the fence. I only hope they hold up throughout winter, as I haven't had the best of luck with berries.

And now a few photos so as not to bore you with dribble...

Broad Bean flowers... looks like a glut of beans on the way!

Romanesco Broccoli... can't wait to see the amazing spiral take shape!
From bottom to top in my hotch-potch patch: Borage (much favoured by the birds!), Tatsoi and Broad Beans.

As mentioned above, the birds are quite fond of my borage!  However, to be hoonest I don't mind, as long as there's plenty of foliage to go 'round.  I'm hoping to get in some bare rooted fruit trees soon, as well as a couple of grape vines and some rambling roses.  More on that later.

This last month has also seen my Little Miss YurtGirl turn 6!  And being the little connissuer that she is, she requested to go to dragonfly, run by good friends of ours.  The next day I managed to whip up this little concoction from ye olde Austrlaia Women's Weekly Birthday Cake Book:

Preeetty impressed with my efforts (despite the fact poor puss' head is larger than his body!).  I may not be a master cake decorator, but I can still churn out a feline likeness!  And Lily was chuffed, so that was the most important thing.

There's also been career changes for Michelle (leaving her job of 7 years), a food tour of Campbelltown which has found me another favourite store in Mercato and further thoughts of opening my own cafe (HAH!).  Well, the last bit might be a bit of a pipe-dream... but you never know! ;)

So I'll leave it a here at the risk of rambling.  I want to enjoy my early Sundy morning before everyone else gets up, by doing a spot of blog-trawling. ;)

  1. I had to Google Tatsoi!

I hope your raspberries make it - there's nothing better than homemade raspberry jam. I've managed to accumulate a LOT of raspberry recipes over the years, if you ever need one. We always had an abundance of them - and rhubarb. ;o)

  2. Asian vegetables are pretty common in Australian veg gardens! :)

I am hopeful with the raspberries! The variety I've planted (Digger's Gold) are low-chill, so hopefully they'll be okay with our temperate seaside conditions! I will definitely bother you for recipes! :)
